Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Recipe Ingredients
Here are some key ingredients needed to make a honeydew smoothie. Substitutions and variations are in the section below.
Be sure to check out the recipe card below for the complete list of ingredients with measurements.

Honeydew melon. In the US, honeydew is in season from July through early October, so late summer into early fall is when you’ll find the sweetest and juiciest melons.Â
Spinach. Baby spinach gives this smoothie a lovely green color and a big boost of extra nutrients like vitamin C, iron, folic acid, carotenoids, plant compounds with antioxidant properties, and fiber. I promise, you won’t taste it!
Greek yogurt. It provides creaminess and protein. Use plain or honey-flavored.
Flaxseed meal. This is ground flaxseed. It adds extra fiber (about 3 grams per tablespoon), protein, and heart-healthy omega-3 fats. Flaxseed meal also helps thicken the smoothie.
Substitutions and Variations
- Mint is delicious with honeydew melon, so feel free to add a sprig or two to the blender. It will also enhance the green color.
- Swap vanilla Greek yogurt for the plain yogurt and omit the honey.
- If you add protein powder, use vanilla protein powder, and omit the honey.
Step-By-Step InstructionsÂ
1. Cut the honeydew melon. Cut it in half crosswise (the stem and blossom ends should be on the sides, scoop out the seeds, and cut each half in half lengthwise. Slide the knife across the bottom of the flesh, along the rind. Then, cut the flesh into cubes about one inch in size. You’ll only need about 1 ½ cups of melon chunks, so freeze the rest for another smoothie.

2. Blend the smoothie. Blend the melon, Greek yogurt, spinach, flaxseed meal, vanilla, and honey until smooth. If adding protein powder, add it last to the liquid, and blend again.

Expert Tips
Picking the perfect melon is hard! But these tips can help:
- Choose one that’s blemish-free with a creamy or yellow rind, not a green rind.
- Check the blossom end (opposite the stem). It should be slightly soft and yield to pressure.
- The melon shouldhave a sweet smell.
- If you tap it, it should have a hollow sound.
For the most refreshing smoothie, start with an ice-cold melon stored in the refrigerator. If you like to prep in advance, I recommend cutting the honeydew melon into cubes and keeping the cubes in the freezer. For easier blending, let them thaw at room temperature for a few minutes while you assemble the rest of the ingredients.
Protein powder is optional in this smoothie, but if you’re drinking this as a light meal, I recommend adding because women should aim for 30g of protein per meal, and men even more. A full scoop of protein powder will boost the protein content to about 34 grams.
How to Enjoy a Honeydew Smoothie
Nutritionally speaking, this smoothie is like a meal in a glass because it has a nice mix of protein, carbs, and healthy fat, from fruit, vegetable, seeds, and dairy. Enjoy it for a light breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack.
Because it’s so hydrating and packed with electrolytes, it also makes a perfect post-workout snack.
